On Sunday Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet attended the fifth annual Armed Forces Day parade at Hendon Town Hall along with Mike Freer, MP for Finchley, Matthew Offord, MP for Hendon, Barnet councillors and the new Mayor, Melvin Cohen.

Serving members of the Armed Forces, cadets and veterans took part in the parade and watched the Armed Forces Flag being raised up the Town Hall’s flag pole.

Theresa said:

“It is important that we use Armed Forces Day to raise awareness of the great work that our service men and women do around the world, and to remember those who have given their lives for our safety.”

“The parade provided an opportunity for the borough of Barnet and its MPs to show their support for our Armed Services and it was an honour to be able to attend. It is always particularly poignant and moving to attend this event in the knowledge that our troops are still actively deployed in Afghanistan, displaying such incredible courage and dedication.”

The Prime Minister used this opportunity to visit Camp Bastion and announced that a permanent memorial to British service personnel who died in Afghanistan would be built at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. This will be funded from fines imposed on banks over the Libor scandal.
