We condemn the planned anti-Israel protest today in a residential area.
Marches and protests of this type sow fear in the families for whom Edgwarebury is home. Their intention is to intimidate and specifically when done in an area with a
visibly Jewish population, this moves from the valid right to protest to an anti-semitic hate march.
We have had heartfelt pleas from parents of autistic children in the area and parents of small children who fear the trauma this will cause their children. They have asked us to advocate for the ban of the march and we have done so.
Why is the trauma of the Jewish community something that can be ignored but the trauma of others seen as of a higher order? The government must do more to stop these protests in residential areas and the harm and pain it is causing our residents and the broader population.
We also ask the Mayor of London to retract his inopportune comments and to be a
mayor for all Londoners. His evident distaste for Israel must not be allowed to overflow into allowing his Jewish residents to be made to live like this.
We thank the police and CST for their support as well as other communal
organisations. However, their help should not be a smokescreen for allowing such
things to happen.
With hope for a peaceful outcome.
The Conservative Councillors of Edgwarebury.
