Councillor Dean Cohen is pleased to announce that the planning appeal submitted by Bridge Lane Beth Hamedrash against the decision taken by Barnet’s Labour councillors at a planning meeting on 18th December 2023 has been approved. This marks a significant victory for the community and the continued operation of faith-based institutions in Barnet.

The planning application was initially set to be refused without coming to committee, but Councillor Cohen intervened, ensuring it was heard and debated. Despite Labour councillors voting to deny the application, the planning inspector has overturned their decision, allowing Bridge Lane Beth Hamedrash to proceed with its plans.

Councillor Dean Cohen commented:

"The decision by Labour councillors to deny this application was both regrettable and shameful. I am delighted that the planning inspector has overturned their erroneous decision and has agreed with me that Bridge Lane Beth Hamedrash’s planning application should be given the green light."

Councillor Cohen also emphasised the broader implications of the decision: "I wish Bridge Lane Beth Hamedrash well and congratulate them on achieving this outcome despite a Labour council that seems determined to make life difficult for our faith schools and the operation of our faiths. This decision is a victory for common sense and the values of inclusivity and respect that underpin our community."

Bridge Lane Beth Hamedrash can now move forward with its plans, contributing to the vibrant and diverse community in Barnet.
