Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet, this weekend attended the annual dinner of the Democratic Party (DEKO), which took place at the Penridge Banqueting Suite in New Southgate. The host was the chairman of DEKO in the UK, Michael Ellinas, and the guest of honour was the party leader, Nicolas Papadopoulos, son of the late President of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos.

Theresa was asked to address the event on behalf of the MPs present, Nick de Bois, MP for Enfield North, and David Burrowes, MP for Enfield Southgate.

She said: "I have campaigned for 16 years for justice for Cyprus and pledge to continue to do so. It is a tragedy that Cyprus has remained divided for 40 years. The Cyprus cause has many supporters in Parliament including Mike Freeer, Matthew Offord, Nick de Bois and David Burrowes. We will continue to support the people of Cyprus as they strive to reach a negotiated settlement to reunite the island so that all Cypriots can live peacefully together once again."

"We will all be standing for re-election on 7th May and we hope that the British Cypriot community will give us their support. It is vital that Cypriots turn out to vote in the general election so their voice can be heard loud and clear in our democracy. This is the most important election for a generation. Turning out to vote really does make a difference."

"There is a very clear difference between the Conservatives who have a long term plan for our economy, and a vote for Labour or any of the rest which would mean more borrowing, more spending and more debt, putting at risk the hard-won economic recovery which has been achieved over the last 5 years."

"I would like to thank Michael Ellinas for his work in hosting this evening's event and for his support over many years."
