MP for Chipping Barnet, Theresa Villiers, has encouraged people from across her constituency to support this year’s Greenacre Bicycle Rally on Sunday 12th June 2011.

Now in its fourth year, the rally is organised by local environmentalists to highlight the benefits of cycling in the suburbs. In the morning, cyclists will set out to complete one and a half laps of a three mile triangular circuit from the Artsdepot in North Finchley, to Friern Barnet, Whetstone and back again.

After lunch, cyclists will set out on a slightly longer ‘Green Ride’ along Dollis Brook, finishing up at the Barnet Countryside Centre’s Annual Environment Fair in Byng Road, High Barnet. Cyclists are also encouraged to dress up and decorate their bikes, with prizes being awarded for fancy dress, ‘bling your bike’ and the best turned out group.

Theresa said, “Having taken part in the rally for the last couple of years, I can say that it’s great fun and a thoroughly enjoyable day out for families.”

“We are all aware of the need to reduce our carbon footprint. The Greenacre Bicycle rally does a great job reminding us all that when it comes to short journeys in the suburbs, we don't always have to jump in the car. Certainly our hills here in Barnet can make cycling a challenge but this kind of active travel can deliver real health benefits as well as helping to tackle congestion.”

“Many thanks must go to the event organisers for what I know will be another great event.”

On the day, cyclist should assemble on the paved area outside the Artsdepot from 10am for a 12 noon start. To take part, cyclists must register for the rally from 10am on the day, or beforehand at [email protected]. There will be Dr. Bike stand giving free bike safety checks between 10am and 11.30am.
