We know that affordable housing matters. The lack of new homes means that housing costs are rising. We are working to address this: we aim to deliver 20,000 new homes by 2030 and are achieving 40% affordable homes in our regeneration schemes, with a mix of lower cost social housing and shared-equity ownership. We are also building over 500 new council houses, offering lower rents to qualifying Barnet residents.
To protect existing suburban neighbourhoods, these new homes will be built in special ‘regeneration zones’. New schools, stations and community centres will be provided and developers will pay for road improvements.
This will not fix the housing problem in London overnight, but if other councils in London were as ambitious as Barnet, housing supply could catch up with demand, stabilising prices. We are therefore calling on all other councils to follow Barnet’s example.
